Hey kids!

The Bougie Baller shared her wisdom on dressing your best while keeping your finances in check. I’ve seen faaar too many chicas with great shoes, fly ‘fits and terrible-- I mean horrendous makeup. But polishing your look doesn’t mean you have to blow your budget.

Recession? Depression? No problem. Your portfolio may have taken a hit, but you don’t have to look like the economy slapped your face. If you are looking for simple daytime makeup, full on black tie glamor, or a look for standing in a breadline-- don’t worry. Let’s explore how ballers on a budget get glammed up without paying department store cosmetics prices.

I. Big Events : Seek Smart Professional Help
For big events such as black tie affairs, professional photographs, being honored at an awards dinner, prom, etc.; budget ballers seek professional help.
Yes, yes, you may wonder how a makeup artist will save you dough. It sounds luxurious. It can be. But don’t sleep:

**student estheticians

For makeup, hair and skin, students work wonders at a fraction of the cost. I’m talking hair cuts, color, facials, peels, microdermabrasion….the list goes on. And because their grades depend on how well they help you, they may just care more than a random stylist. Don’t worry, teacher/overseers won’t let you leave looking crazy. Make sure you book in advance, and allow plenty of time in case there is a wait the day of your service. That said, pack your patience.

Bonus: top notch style at a fraction of the cost. Where to find them: try Aveda Institutes in your area.

**The Makeup counter

Department stores are great places to have full makeup done for free, or for a nominal fee. You’ll likely pay $50 with the ability to redeem the cost in product! Hiring a pro makeup artist starts at $100, plus an hourly fee. On top of that you WON’T get the ability to redeem the cost in product with a hired artist. So for your next big event, professional photograph that will last a lifetime- why not trust your face to a pro? Many artists at the counter see and work with all types of people every day. As a result, they are some of the most versatile and talented artists.

Tips:

Call a couple of days ahead to schedule an appointment.

Communication is important. A good artist will have a chat with you before getting started. When you go, walk in ready to explain to the artist why you are there. If it is for a photograph, let it be known! Your artist will customize your look for black and white photography, color photography, etc.

If you don’t exactly know what you want, take a few magazine clippings of looks you find attractive.

Use your time wisely. Ask questions and pick up tips while you’re in the chair. It’s your time, so find out how the artist achieves your look so that you can re-create it later! (then practice practice practice the next day)

Shower before you go and wear a button down shirt. This helps prevent wardrobe change accidents. Pulling a shirt over your head can be fatal.

Bonus: A fabulous face without the worry. Makeup customized for your event, at a fraction of the cost for a personal make up artist. A small fee, redeemable in product.

II. Every day: do- it- yourself (and do it well)

Most days and weekends you’re not going to go to the makeup counter. If you’re like me, you aren’t even inclined to wear makeup daily. Okay. That’s fine. But you can still look just as good doing your own makeup without spending unnecessary amounts of money on products from department stores.

The premise is simple: save money by eliminating excess.

How? Do your homework, make products work for you by pulling double duty, practice proper technique, and when all else fails: fake it ‘till you make it.

1. DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Before you spend one dime- do a self- assessment.

I believe it when people say makeup doesn’t give you anything you don’t already have. It just enhances what you do have. With that in mind, what would you like to enhance? Love your eyes and want to bring them out more? Love your bone structure? Your Lips? Figure out what you’d like to highlight. This will tell you what your essential products are. Make these the basics for a great look- and add other features from there for fun.

For example, if I want to highlight my eyes this season, I don’t necessarily need to purchase a new, trendy lipstick color. I’ll take that attitude with me to the store, so I wont be tempted to purchase something I don’t need.

What are your essential products? Decide for yourself what you need the most.
Lips: seek a great lip liner, and gloss and/or lipstick.
Bone structure: highlighter / bronzer / blush.
Eyes: mascara, liner.
Skin: moisturizer, foundation, concealer.

What are you willing to compromise?
Some people can live with drug store mascara. Some people can live with drug store moisturizer. Bargain with yourself.
I personally think Maybelline mascara works just as well as any department store brand I’ve tried. But you’ll have to pry my LaMer moisturizer out of my cold, dead hands!
It’s not a fault- it’s a preference, honey. What’s yours?

Get samples!
Cosmetic counters and stores give samples! And they give enough samples to live off of sometimes. My travel mascaras are samples. Want to try a new foundation? Ask for samples first! Try it out in daylight, at home, during the day, at night—really test drive it. Don’t drop $ on foundation that doesn’t work for you outside of the store.

2. DOUBLE DUTY
The most aggressive approach you can take to cutting costs is to choose products that pull ‘double duty’. That means each product is great for multiple purposes, so you don’t have to purchase so many items. A few suggestions follow, but you can certainly get creative with this concept.

A) Pigments – The hardest working product in the biz
MAC and Loreal HIP make excellent pigments! However, HIP is about ½ the price of MAC.

Pigments are sold as vials of powdered color and can be used anywhere on the face, décolleté, cheeks, eyes, lips, nails and hair. They can be used as a blush, contour, highlight, to enhance, whatever you want - anything, anywhere. But, make sure you read the packaging because different colors are not appropriate for use on eyes, or lips.

To pull double (or more) duty with pigments, use them dry for blush, or for eye color you can place them on top of a cream eyeshadow base. If you’d like to use them alone for eye color just add them to a mixing medium such as saline solution *the stuff for your contact lenses*, and use as a paint. Press them into wet clear nail polish for a change of nail color.

B) Makeup Primer
Makeup primer is a great way to help foundation stay put all day, and it really smooths out the skin before application. I love Smashbox Photofinish. But it is not exactly the easiest on my wallet. That’s where Anti-Chafing Gel comes in. Both products are dimethicone based and have nearly the same ingredients. But the anti-chafing gel costs 75% less!!

The downside is that the maker is Monistat, which may make some people believe it is for ‘personal’ use. However, the product is meant to be used between knees and thighs for those who chafe there, for example: runners.
Bonus: 75% savings for the same product; easy to purchase at any drugstore; regularly goes on sale bogo.

C) Foundation/Moisturizer = Tinted Moisturizer
Why buy foundation, tinted moisturizer and moisturizer?
On a normal weekday you may not like to wear foundation. Especially if you just don’t need that much coverage. So why not purchase foundation, and blend with your moisturizer to make tinted moisturizer? You’ll save the cost of buying an extra product, and you can customize the blend to get the exact amount of coverage you need at the time.

D) Natural Oils
Coconut and grapeseed oil are two of the most useful tools in your arsenal. They both do so much!

Unrefined Coconut oil (found in the grocery store!) can be used for Cooking your food. It’s been shown to raise metabolism (hello skinny jeans), and fight heart disease. But did you also know it’s one of the best hair conditioners around? That’s because it is one of the few oils that can actually penetrate the hair shaft and not just sit on top. Try it as a pre-shampoo treatment. Let it sit on your hair for an hour before shampooing and enjoy the difference.
Coconut oil is also great for dry skin. Apply directly, or add to a warm bath.

Grapeseed oil can be used to remove makeup, without harsh chemicals. To use as a remover, simply massage your face with grapeseed oil before washing as usual. Easy!

E) Tend Skin
It’s getting cold outside, and unless you’re fortunate enough to be beach bound, you’ve probably put those bikinis in winter storage—and the Tend Skin along with them. Tend Skin is the razor-bump solution with a cult-like following. It’s just that good. But good doesn’t come cheap. So what else can it be used for?

According to Estheticians at Georgette Klinger, guys and girls can use Tend Skin as a great facial toner. Now you can cross Toner off your list of things to buy. Simply swipe Tend Skin on with a cotton ball. Follow up with a good moisturizer.

Now, if you want to save even more, you can make your own with this easy recipe. Just make sure to shake it up before each use.

solution 1:
18 tablets uncoated aspirin, crushed
5 oz. rubbing alcohol
combine.

solution 2:
8 tablets uncoated aspirin, crushed
2.5 oz. witch hazel
combine.

Combine the two solutions. the aspirin will settle a bit, so shake it before use. It can also be used to spot treat blemishes. (aspirin is acetic and salicylic acids.)

3. TECHNIQUE IS EVERYTHING

Makeup application technique is important. It will save you product over the long run, which saves you money. Less product is necessary when it is applied properly. Also, it will look better if it is applied as intended, so you’ll be less inclined to run out searching for something ‘better’.

Ways to improve your technique:

Watch youtube tutorials. There are a TON of them.

Practice.

Take advice from people you admire.

Ask questions of professionals when you have the chance (like when you’re at the counter)

Bonus: Stay organized to prevent double purchases

4. FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT
Tool Time
Tools are very important for getting the look you want, but are an investment. Makeup brushes can easily cost $40 each. But Bougie Ballers know to shop in the local craft store for artists brushes at a fraction of the cost. Pro makeup artists love LOEW-CORNELL brushes from Michael’s craft store. Budget fashionistas also rave about the Sonia Kashuk line from Target.

Curl Power
Invest in good eyelash curler. It will save you from using so much mascara, and as a one time purchase, It’s a wise choice.

Clean Slate

Makeup removing wipes are convenient on the run or at work, when you don’t have time to break out the coconut or grapeseed oil. But at around $25 for 100 sheets, they must contain the tears of babies born on February 29th.

Speaking of babies, you can use baby wipes to remove makeup for about $4 for 77 sheets. And they work just as well. Really.

Color Combos
Last suggestion for today is that you can always fake an expensive color combination. Rich color combinations are key. Bronze and gold is hitting the runways hard this season. Interpret the trend without going overboard by using a light hand, and the proper tools.

Check out makeup pallets designers release for color combination ideas. They typically coincide with current runway trends. Then head to the nearest drugstore and re-create the look for less. Seriously, the economy needs a big ol' hug and a band-aid right now!

In other news... hi everyone...yikes, I've been gone for a while!

But I'm back for now with some financial tips.

The economy has taken a beating in the past few months. My friends and I have been watching our 401ks go UP and DOWN and UP and DOWN... not fun and very confusing.

So I decided to go out and educate myself. I started reading financial blogs, magazines, and websites. I started speaking to financial advisors (off the record of course) and money market brainiacs. And of course, I broke out my Suze Orman guide... just to see what she thinks about stuff like this!

All in all, my sense of the economy is still up in the air ... but I feel a lot more knowledgeable about my situation.

*disclaimer: please take this with a grain of salt. Do your own research and speak with your own advisors. As my lawyer says - I am not responsible for any of the decisions you make (smile)!*

One of my favorite blogs right now is Bargaineering. It's a "average joe" website for your average spender/budget. It's a great place to discuss "discuss matters of shopping, insurance, investing, retirement, loans, credit cards, mortgages, bargain hunting and other issues related to personal finance." Check out the articles section which is chock full of great discussions.

Another piece of simple advice - make sure all of your funds are FDIC-insured and under the cap ($100,000 or less, wow!). Unfortunately, stocks are not FDIC-insured... but certificate of deposits (cds) are!

Well what else have I done to pad myself for the economy? A while ago, I opened an ING-Direct orange savings account... and invited my friends to do the same. For every friend that signed up, I received $10 and they received $25. Pretty cool huh? But more important - the ING-Direct orange savings has automatic deductions and is FDIC-insured. I call that account my "rainy day" fund and the interest rate of return is great.

Sometimes I'm tempted to take out the money... but then I remember that this is a long term process... and that I need to be patient. FYI - ING CDs are at a 4.25% annual percentage yield if you deposit for 24 months or 60 months... which means if you deposit $1000 in a 24 month CD, you'll earn $42.50 per year just for leaving it alone!

So what else?

The common sense approach is my favorite - cut back on spending. Take a good hard look at your day-to-day expenses. A financial advisor friend recommended that I keep a financial diary - either a written account or an excel document that tracks spending. Am I spending too much on takeout food? Too much on shopping? Too much on travel and gas? Figure it out and cut back!

So keep smiling my bougie ballers... times may be hard but we will make it through... and learn a lot in the process!

Be careful when shopping for swimwear at VS. The materials used in their swimwear are often, in a word, suspect. They use blends of random man-made fibres and most suits are shinier in person than on the website, so they sometimes look cheap. Do you want to be that girl in the pool adjusting her non-breathable swimwear sticking to her skin? No – so remove the extra padding – it feels and looks weird. I still love VS because they carry brands for cheaper than you would find them in Nordstrom’s, like Opi, Vitamin A, DKNY and Vix. Moreover, there is a sale every two minutes.

Guess and Marciano (Worldwide)
Guess/Marciano swimwear is affordable and reliable. However, G/M offer little by way of extra support in bra construction. Still, their swimwear is sturdy and will last a good few years, even if you swim a lot.

Club Monaco (Worldwide)
Club Monaco has introduced swimwear this season, retailing full-priced swimwear at $89!

Malia Mills (Soho, NY)
I have an infamous denim bikini that generally stops people dead in their tracks that I found here when I was 20. They carry size 2 to 16, cup 30AA to 40DD. It’s a gold mine, sales go up to 70%.

Molly Brown’s (Newport Beach, CA)
Amazing selection of gorgeous mid-to-high end bikinis. They follow magazine trends very closely. Their sales pop up randomly and without warning, and are never much more than 30% off.

Macy’s (Worldwide)
Macy’s carries recognizable brands for around 65% off. The time for the best swimsuit deals are from Fall to Winter.

In other news... Father's Day is right around the corner! Now as I see it, Father's day is similar to Mother's Day since it's all about appreciating (the men) in your life. But for me - that's where the similarities end... Father's Day is one of the most difficult holidays for me because I never know what to get! Every year, I give my dad a gift and he says "thanks... it's the thought that counts," and gives it back to me. The man has everything he wants and needs - he's impossible to shop for! I'm tempted to give him discounted designer underwear but that's pretty pathetic.

So I asked my male friends and relatives - what are you giving your dad for Father's Day and what would you want to receive if you were a father... the results included:

underwear (go figure)
Rock Band
dinner
and a watch

**YAWN **

The most "interesting" suggestion came from a friend who suggested... a bolo tie. Wowzers.

But there were some other interesting suggestions like the ones provided by Mr. Coker - a family dvd of funny events and pictures, a digital picture frame with family photos already uploaded, or an old-school framed photo of the 'rents.

I'd add a homemade coupon book to the "creative list" - my brother and I made one a few years ago that included things like "1 movie night of your choosing," and "1 car-wash." The key is to be creative and imaginative!

It also might be fun to get your dad a one-time only personal shopper. If you dad is like my dad and hates shopping, then why not volunteer your time and do his shopping for him? Quick, easy, affordable, and creative! And when in doubt... a phone call or a card is always the simplest (and sometimes the most poignant) solution.

In any case, yes - my brother and I are still trying to figure out what to get daddy dearest for Father's Day... the never-ending battle goes on! Hmmm maybe these guys can help me figure it out!

It is my pleasure to guest write this blog entry on how to ball out of control when you are overseas. I am hoping this will help you in your summer travels!

So I do a fair amount of international travel…ok…ok…perhaps too much but my favorite part is finding shopping bargains in other countries. I have plenty of ‘expensive’ items (Gucci bags, handmade silk garments, YSL and Dior sunglasses, Burberry coat, etc.) but NEVER pay full price...its against all my bougie ballin principles. So how do I do it? I’m going to let you in on a few key places you MUST visit if you like the crème de la crème of fashion. It is important to understand this information is not easy to come by…few insiders know…so be discerning in who to share this information with.

I’m still working on my travel portfolio but are few key places in ascending order of greatness:

Italy

By leaps and bounds Italy wins hands down for the deals you will find in this country if you travel off the beaten path. Warning: DO NOT expect to find deals in Milan, Venice, Rome, Florence (I’ve been to them all)!!! About an hour outside of Florence is The Outlet Mall which has outlets for Gucci, YSL, Valentino, Armani, La Perla, Ferragamao, Alexander McQueen, Emilo Pucci, and many more. It’s the first Gucci outlet and was not even advertised by Gucci. Even my boyfriend who abhors shopping found a bangin' pair of Gucci loafers for over 75% off the regular price.

Not too far from The Outlet Mall are other smaller outlet malls for Prada (called Space) and Dolce & Gabbana. More amazing deals to be had! Make sure you spend AT LEAST a day looking around. To get to the outlet malls…either rent a car (this is what I did) or join one of the shopping tour groups that leave from Florence.

Turkey

To my ballers that are homeowners or that like to decorate their homes: Get to Turkey!! The Turkish rugs are amazing and significantly cheaper than the ones they sell in the US and all the carpet dealers ship worldwide. No need to spend money on to look like you have high end carpets such as this one from Neiman’s (I swear I saw a similar rug for $400).
Instead of spend thousands, head to Istanbul for some amazing sightseeing and pick up a rug for cheaper than it would cost for a flight and one rug in the states.

London

Right smack dab in the middle of London is the Burberry outlet. A short ride on the Tube and a lil walk will take you to a big building of everything that is Burberry. If this is your brand…you must make the visit! With the conversation rate of pound for dollar—it is the only shopping you should do in London. Well…its also necessary to stop by Topshop!

Spain

I don’t care if you spend 2 hours in the Madrid airport or if you actually spend some time in Madrid or Barcelona but make sure you bring an extra suitcase and stop by Zara and Mango (Penelope Cruz currently has a collection for them). They are two Spanish-based fashion chains whose prices in their home country are SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than in the United States.

Jamaica

I would be remiss if I did not include the island of Jamaica on this list. For everyone that has friends and co-workers that are coffee lovers (who is not these days?)—buy packets of Blue Mountain Coffee. To the coffee connoisseur, Blue Mountain is simply divine! And its super expensive outside of Jamaica. Just head to any supermarket…please steer clear of tourist traps/shops…and stock up and then give them as gifts!

Mama You Know I Love You...

I've been gone and I certainly missed you! I hope you've been checking out the Facebook Group because there are plenty of daily deals, steals, and bougie appeals posted for everyone.

Moving on to more news: MOTHER'S DAY! It's just around the corner!

I love Mother's Day! What better way to show appreciate to mom then a day completely devoted to how awesome she is? Realistically we should tell tell our mother's how much we appreciate her everyday, but Mother's Day gives us a chance to make up for all of the forgetful moments, the gaffs, and the mistakes.

And Mother's Day doesn't just have to be for your mother... I like to surprise my aunts, my grandmothers, and some of the other important "mom" figures in my life with cards or little tokens to say "I appreciate you."

But how do you show someone you appreciate them without breezing through all your worldly savings? Or in my case, how do you show a group of women that already have everything that you love and appreciate them?

1. Be "around": If you're mom is the emotional sort or loves your company, she'll love the idea of you being around... even if it's just for a day or two. You might not have the money to throw buckets of stuff at her, but you can hang out with her for the weekend, cook her breakfast, take her to the movies, and do simple stuff for her (like clean the house or take out the trash). This is a great option if you live semi-close or within traveling distance. Check out Expedia, Travelocity, Priceline, and Kayak for last minute airfare travel deals, use AAA to get a 10% discount on Amtrak, or just hop on the various cheap travel buses like New Century Travel (do it for mom)!

2. Give her an "experience": Take mom out to dinner, take her to a play, or take her to her favorite garden. If you want to get really sentimental, take her somewhere that has significance for both of you. Are you and your mom science geeks? Take her to the Body World Exhibit! Another example - my grandmothers are both fans of The View... so I got them tickets to go hang out and sit in the audience ... it was also an economical decision since tickets are free :) Be creative with this one since there are lots of interesting and fun things you can do here!

3. Be "material": Is mom a rare flowers fanatic? Send her a combination of her favorite flowers. Send her on a day-long spa trip. Get her a cute charm bracelet... is she a technology wiz? Send her the latest in scanner technology!

4. Be "creative": Make a photo album with memorable moments from her life, starting with childhood. Plan a home-cooked brunch for all of the dynamic women in your life, and honor them each with a little handwritten memory card... call your mom at the crack of dawn and sing her favorite song over the phone!

500 Bougies Deep and Still Rising!

Bougies! I'm happy to report that the Bougie Ballin' on a Budget Facebook Group has reached 500+ members! Wow! Stuff like that really gets me excited and keeps me motivated.

So to help me along on this adventure, please continue to encourage people to join the group. The more the merrier! I am working on a few things here and there so keep your fingers crossed... because it would mean great things for you, the readers and forum members!

Moving on, I had to let you in on a purchase I made last week. One word: phenomenal!

MAC Primer: Prep+Prime Skin is amazing. You apply the primer after you have applied moisturizer to fresh and clean skin. The primer acts as an enhancer by evening out your skin tones, reducing redness, and getting rid of excess oil. The primer resembles skin moisturizer in color (white) but contains silicones... after applying a small amount, my skin felt incredibly smooth! The product is non-comedogenic and oil free so it will not cause break outs.

MAC Primer also comes in SPF 50 Flavor which is useful if you do not use a moisturizer with sunscreen (you should!)... since I use a moisturizer with sunscreen, I prefer the regular PRIMER since it is a bit lighter in density.

But back to the most important part... how does it work? Well after putting on the primer, I put on my makeup (tinted moisturizer, a bit of concealer, and a bit of blot powder), mascara, and lip-gloss and ran to my appointment... by the time I got home 5 hours later... my makeup hadn't budged! No streaking... no shiny factor, no smudging... no looking warn and run-down from the NYC heat and congestion! I used the primer again on Saturday... same results! My makeup looked just as good as when I departed for the event... I'm sold!

The primer runs about $22 from your local MAC store. $22 might seem a bit pricey for the bougie baller in all of us... but it's definitely worth the money since your makeup will last longer and your skin will look and feel more radiant!

For an alternate, try Velvet Veil by Face Time Cosmetics. It's comes highly recommended from beauty bloggers!

Hi Bougies...

I have some good news... first, my self-imposed traveling/working nightmare exile is almost over (well at least for the next two weeks)... a breather for me means a new post for you! Hooray! I've got so much stuff stored up and ready to share with you guys... you can catch a quick peek at some of my more recent finds by checking out the Facebook Group.

More good news... the sample sales, outlet shopping, and seasonal fashion sales aren't dead yet! While in Austin and Vegas, I had a bit of a mini frenzy... buying a gazillion lifestyle items... and yet when I tallied my receipts*, I hadn't dropped more than $200 (and I bought over 10 items, including an Armani Exchange leather and wool sweater... booya)! If you're into power-budget shopping like I am, I suggest you sign up for Outlet VIP Status. In food news, Restaurant Week is (clearly) over... but April feasting events are just starting. In the case of MEGU NYC that signals an opportunity. Megu is teaming up with the City Harvest Campaign to "promote awareness in the fight against hunger"... they are offering a $125 pre-fixe menu which includes Wild Red Snapper, Sashimi, Signature Dish Sampler, Kobe Beef Flambe, Sushi, Soup, and Dessert. 10% of the proceeds will go to the Spring for City Harvest Campaign. Expensive? Compared to Megu's regular menu... no. Compared to their Restaurant Week menu? Yes. But, it's a great opportunity to do something great for charity, and sample one a great restaurant at a low price. Interested in other charity events like this? Try out the American Cancer Society's Taste of Hope scheduled for April 30, 2008. GVG is also the King of the charity wine and dine, and I'm sure he'll also have a few events scheduled for the future! PS - vote for him!

And finally, although I try and keep my posts appealing to both women and men... I know it can be rough out here in these streets for guys, especially with things like high-end sample sales... which is why I am happy to announce that the Gilt Groupe will now be selling men's designs as of April 16! *My habits/advice: When I shop, I have a habit of mentally calculating how much I've spent. Once I'm done shopping, I go home and tally the receipts for my budget records (if I'm on the road, I keep all my non-business related receipts in a business envelope).

This is also useful if I think I've overspent, or if I think I spent frivolously (yes there is a difference), or if I think I just don't want/need something anymore. And if that's the case - I'll return the item(s) with a quickness.

Don't believe me? I bought a pair of shoes in Las Vegas... please believe I shipped those bad boys back to Vegas to get a full refund! Turns out the shoe wasn't what I expected... no need for regret, especially since most stores have excellent return policies... even on sale items.

Bits and Pieces from an Exhausted "Baller"

Hello my bougie brethren!

A little about my state of mind... I'm EXHAUSTED! From traveling to the chilly plains of Ann Arbor... to celebrating the birth of loved ones in DC... to braving killer winds and monsoon rains in Texas... the bb is beat!

But a few things inspired me to post... first and foremost... SALES SALES SALES! And all kinds of sales too... the nice thing about business trips is that I usually have a few moments to slip out and do some exploring... Ann Arbor was no exception and I was stunned to find Poshh is a fabulous boutique with a unique sense of style... and yes, they have amazing sales! Check them out on Facebook too!

While bumming around in my homie's abode (who is on a level of bougie ballin' fabulous I can't even describe... shout-out to Ms. Sai!)... I found a viritual treasure chest in ASOS Online. Run to the clearing rack folks... they have tons of goodies for women (clothing, beauty, accessories, etc.) and they carry men's clothes/items as well. I ended up purchasing this stunner:

What Women Want: The 2008 Valentine's Day Edition!

Happy Valentine's Day my bougie folks!

So... Valentine's Day... a day for sunshine and roses, candlelight dinners, and pricey baubles? Perhaps not so much... Valentine's Day is one of those weird "non-federal" holidays that inspires a range of emotions in the general population. Old flames get nostalgic, couples argue over expectations then apologize with stolen kisses, and single folks run rampant in the streets spreading love galore. Quite the exaggeration, I know *smile*

One thing I've realized over the years is that I don't want Valentine's Day to be about fancy gifts or forced declarations of love infinite. At the same time, I'm a romantic hypocrite (of course), so if Prince Charming shows up on my doorstep with a Tiffany's bangle and a bouquet of roses... surely I am not going to deny him the pleasure of my V-Day company!

To my male readers, I know - confusing, conflicted, contradictory! So in order to help you out, I prepared a brief list - "What Women Want: The 2008 Valentine's Day Edition!" A gift for every occasion, an action for every desire. And really, this isn't only good for Valentine's Day... also useful for birthdays, Christmases, special occasions, and meaningful dalliances.

So without further ado...

"What Women Want: The 2008 Valentine's Day Edition"

1. Thought - Do you know me? Do you know what I like? Do you know what makes me giddy? It really doesn't take much, all you have to do is listen! Being thoughtful doesn't have to involve a material object either. If you know that I'm stressed with work... surprise me by cleaning the apartment, washing the laundry, or doing the dishes. Have I been homesick lately? Arrange for a surprise phone-call from my family and/or friends. Am I avoiding my taxes because I'm clueless when it comes to this kind of thing? Provide me with a list of certified pro-bono tax accountants (with a cute note attached, of course)!

Thrifty suggestion:
*Hire your sweetie a professional cleaner for one day (suggestion courtesy of Angela W.)... expensive? Not necessarily. Cleaning services can run as low as $10 an hour depending on apartment size and "mess" - check out http://www.maids.com/ http://www.merrymaids.com/locations/

2. Creativity - Standard V-Day stuff is cute but often *yawn-worthy*. Chocolates are boring, flowers *can* be exciting... but they die. Ever tried scrap-booking? Make a book of "all your favorite moments (or pay someone else to do it)... go "paint-balling" with a group of friends, arrange a private "sample-sale party" through a style consultant!

Thrifty suggestion:
*Has your lady always wanted to shoot a rifle? Gun range! Or maybe she's a golf aficionado... sign her up for 5 golf lessons at her local golf course. The trick is to find something unusual that she loves/wants.

3. Experience - I've been hearing a lot of discussion about providing someone with an "experience" rather than a "material object"... I couldn't agree more! Take your honey to her favorite off-broadway play, get her a personal-day shopper from Nordstrom's, take her to Mohegan Sun for a couples day-spa trip.

Thrifty suggestion:
*Buy your lady a ticket to a sample sale extravaganza like Shecky's Girl's Night Out ($10-$30), or if you want to do something together, take her to a restaurant that has special meaning to the two of you... that could be a place as snazzy as French Laundry... or as bootleg as Old Country Buffet - price doesn't matter, "meaning" and "shared experience" does.

4. Material - No lady is going to turn down diamonds... but you don't need to offer something that crazy/outrageous in order to show her that you care (in a material way). Is she a Tiffany's fan? Buy her a cute and affordable charm for her bracelet (or just the bracelet and add to it on special occasions)... feeling a little braggadocios? Plan a budget get-away to Washington, DC, Miami, or Puerto RIco... use tools like Priceline, Hotwire, and Kayak to figure out affordable and fun options for a quick domestic or foreign jaunt.

Thrifty suggestion:
Check out the jewelry selection from your local discount retailer or online store (no one has to know!)... for example, check out the jewelry selection on Overstock.

So just some fun suggestions folks! And remember that V-Day isn't necessarily *that* serious... but it can definitely be a time for fun and memories too! For my single ladies/men... revel in yourself and treat your body to something special (who says you can't spoil yourself?)... go out with your friends, hit the lounges, hit the bars, have a nice dinner and celebrate your friendships!

And ladies, remember that if you do choose to celebrate V-Day... it's not a one-way street. Do something to show your dude that you care... he'll appreciate it :)

Sample Sale Madness!

So if you're like me, you love a good sample sale... but hate the madness associated with it!

My first experience with sample sales was in the form of Kate Spade in 2003... my friend Leah had several Kate Spade bags and promised to take me with her to the next big (and secret!) sample sale in NYC. I eagerly awaited what I thought would be a "swanky" private... and sufficiently bougie event. I imagined waiters carrying glasses of lemonade to parched shoppers... and a sea of bags in different shapes, sizes and colors!

Clearly I was dead wrong in my imagining... arriving at the sale, we found throngs of New York women huddled in a long line circling the block. We were given dirty stares by determined women and resigned glances by men hoping to buy a nice bag for a female companion at a cheap price. The line was so awful, that by the time we got into the actual store... all of the bags were gone. What a disappointment! I quickly learned my lesson - if you're not first at a sample sale... you're last! (thank you ricky bobby!)

But in this modern day and age, sample sales have gone "le digital"... perfect for the smart and savvy shopping enthusiast. Kate Spade (and Jack Spade... for the men) still has a regular sample sale, but now you just have to click a button! Presto - no line, no cold, no bitterness!

There's an art to "online sample saling" and I've been fortune to meet some individuals extremely skilled at doing it.
Ekei, a bougie blogger in her own right, put me on to several sites that are wonderful, fascinating, and budget-friendly.

Bargain Shopping, NYC Style

Folks... what a week. No comment on the long gap between postings... just know that I'm finally back to 100% health-wise :)

Onto other bougie news... I finally scored a big fashion "investment" for myself... I'll keep it a secret until it debuts, but know that there are some things that simply cannot be bargain-hunted down... *smile*

Anyway, this leads me to the subject of this post... High-End Winter Clearance Sales... hooray!

Right around now, most high-end designer stores desperately need to get rid of their merchandise. I don't pretend to know anything about the retail business, so I won't offer reasons as to WHY they do this... just know that they do this... and the loot is GOOD.

On Sunday, my mother and I took a jaunt on down to Bergdorf Goodman and Saks in NYC (5th Avenue/Madison Ave). It was phenomenal... amazing! And not just for the ladies... my father managed to score a few goodies from the men's section as well.

Shopping in person can be well worth the time and effort... If you've been saving your pennies for some designer gear... now is the time to dive in (fyi, both stores will be having further markdowns starting Thursday 1/24/2008). If you can make the trip to your local luxury department store, do it. Oftentimes there will be items on the racks that don't show up in online searches. Ditto on local boutiques - they often have higher discounts than what the offer online. If you can't make it out to the actual store - a phone call is a worthwhile endeavor.

Keeping this post short and sweet, I've picked out a few of my favorite "discount" items for men and women... great way to start your collection... or add to a fabulous closet. Remember to *call* the department store and/or boutique directly... you might save yourself a considerable amount of money!

I'm generally none too discriminating in my tastes as part of my ability to budget stems from a willingness to eat at "Old Country Buffet" or "IHOP" when times get rough (or after a late night of socializing... whatever!). I blame my this on my father, who is known for making midnight runs to the infamous "Ranch House" in Hartford, or eating fried pigeon off of those suspect NYC vending carts (those things are delicious... don't deny it my bougies)!

My mother of course, is HORRIFIED by this behavior and for years has attempted to counteract this it by enrolling me in various etiquette classes, and taking me to "fine dining establishments." "Remember" she'd demand, "When in doubt, start with out!" Or another favorite, "It's pronounced FILET MEN-YON," not "FILEGT MIG-NOG!" Surprisingly, her lessons took hold and the pleasure I get from food is not limited to "greasy bar-dives."

In fact, since moving to the NYC area, I've become somewhat of a "Fine Dining" Junkie, using every available opportunity to eat at some of New York's/New Jersey/Philadelphia/Chicago/Las Vegas... etc. etc. most "intimidating" food locations... Gramercy Tavern, Nobu, Asia de Cuba, Buddaken, Tangerine's, Tavern on the Green, the Four Seasons... the list goes on... and on... and on. At one point, my addiction was so bad, that I contemplating trying "French Laundry" while on a trip to the Bay Area where pre-fix prices (per person!) start at $210. *smh*

Clearly fine dining can be an expensive foray... and if you're going to do it, do it big or go home. There's no sense in going to a place like Megu and spending $25 for a glass of water and a bowl of Miso Soup just so you can stay on your budget and say you ate there. But, fine dining doesn't need to be an insane adventure where you drop $1000 on one meal. Instead, use it as an opportunity to explore various avenues and paths... here are some of my suggestions on how to get your "bougie grub on" without dipping too deep in your pockets:

1) Restaurant Week

Restaurant Week is one of those brilliant creations that allow local restaurants (fine and otherwise) and bougie purveyors on a budget to mutually benefit one another. During restaurant week, participating restaurants offer pre-fixe meals at set prices... for most restaurants, the prices are set much lower than average (i.e. $25 for three course lunch, $35 for three course dinner). This is a perfect way for you to eat at all of the restaurants you WISH you could eat at, and stay on a fixed budget. Check your local listings, most cities offer some type of restaurant week:

2) Taste of [Insert City Name Here]
Don't turn your nose up at city-wide tastings! This is a great opportunity to "sample" fine dining and decide if a certain restaurant is for you (or not). There's nothing worse than shelling out a good amount of money for what you "think" would be an excellent food experience... and you find the food bland, the water tepid, and the service sour. A Taste of [City] easily solves that problem buy bringing the meal to you in bite sized morzels... no fuss, no muss, and easy decision making! A Taste of [City] can also offer you alternatives or new restaurants that may not have made your initial list, but now pique your curiosity!

Arguably the most famous "A Taste of [City]" is the Taste of Chicago ... I've known people to fly out to Chicago, simply for the festival (http://www.tasteofchicago.us)! Other cities also hold their own tasting festivals and they're relitively easy to find; for example:

Hartford (http://www.tasteofhartford.com/)
Atlanta (http://tasteofatlanta.net/)

Again, check your local listings - definitely a enjoyable as a solo or as part of a group experience!

3) Sampling menus - While nowhere near as reasonably priced as Restaurant Week, most high-end restaurants offer pre-fixe meals/prices available in 3 course, 5 course, and 7 course options. For example, Mediterra (Princeton, NJ) offers $50, $100, and $150 options which occasionally include a free wine pairing. Check your local restaurants for such options, it may save you a considerable amount of money. Local restaurants will sometimes do "tasting parties" where you can pick and choose multiple "tapa" type entrees.

4) My fourth and final suggestion is a "common sense" suggestion. Don't assume that a famous name, a high rating, and a pricey menu indicate fine dining! If you do, you'll lose on on some wonderful establishments that exist under the radar. My best advice is to talk to friends, and colleagues - they often have suggestions that are mind-boggling!

For example, although I pop in and out of Brooklyn on occasion, I'd never tried Sugarcane Restaurant, until last Winter when a few friends put me on: http://www.sugarcanerestaurant.com. While the service was "questionable," the overall food and drink experience was delightful. Deliciously priced and artfully named mojitos, savory caribbean and southern entrees, and of course gorgeous and mouthwatering desserts (on which we had to pass... too full)! Everyone's experience *will* be different, so make sure you amass multiple opinions before you dive into fine dining.

Another suggestion would be to start a "dining club" where you and some of your friends do lunch/brunch/dinner at a different upscale eatery once or twice a month (again remembering... upscale doesn't have to equal expensive). I'm a huge fan of lunch at the Bergdorf Goodman Cafe, first because it's nice to relax after a hard day of (window) shopping, and second, the food is yummy, reasonably priced, the couches and chairs are comfortable, and the service is excellent. Try experimenting with your options - different types of food, different price range, different location. You'll be bougie eating (on a budget of course) in no time!

But not really...

Since early childhood, I've been a voracious reader. I'm a nerd in the classical sense - I was that kid on the playground in 2nd grade reading treasure island while everyone else was playing kickball... by 4th grade I had graduated to Toni Morrison and George Orwell. Sickening, I know.

Whatever the case may be, reading books is now my occupation and I really can't be mad at that. For every "non-pleasure" book I read, I try to read one of my own choosing. Unsurprisingly, my personal library is massive (and right now completely contained to storage...womp womp)...

Recently, I've noticed an increase in the amount of "big readers"... and by "big readers," I mean people that read constantly... whether it be "52 books in 52 weeks" or something as simple as sporadic interest in the New York Times Book Review...

But along with this increased desire to read comes an overwhelmingly loud complaint: "It's too expensive to read everything I want to read!" My first instinct would be to tell you to take yourself to the library and "rent" a book! However, my second (kinder... gentler) instinct would tell you that there are many alternatives to starting/expanding your personal library!

I've always been aware of the "expensiveness" surrounding books (especially new ones) but I ignored it given my interest. However, when my generals exams forced me to ponder the purchase of approximately 600 books...at...the...same...time... I was forced to come up with a solution that wouldn't hurt my pockets, but would allow me to expand my database.

My solution (and the secret that 90% of graduate students in the humanities and social sciences share)?

Alibris (www.alibris.com) - a website that allows the buyer to purchase books at a fraction of the price... while maintaining quality. I've purchased books for as low as 35 cents...! Even better, for every purchase, Alibris will apply a discount for your future purchases. Yes, many of the books are second-hand, but second-hand doesn't necessarily mean second-rate. Merchants describe the condition and usability of the book, so that you can determine how much you are/aren't willing to pay. Amazon offers a similar service (which I encourage you to check out) but on the average, Alibris' books are better quality, lower prices, and arrive faster.

So next time you go to buy that $50 biography on [insert presidential hopeful here]... check out Alibris first. You might find something special... and satisfyingly affordable!

Jungle Julia: A Very Brief Note

Did anyone see the movie Death Proof starring Syndey T. Poiter as "Jungle Julia?" One of the things that puzzled me about the movie was how in the hell they could call her character "Jungle Julia" and have no real references to anything... Jungle-like (racial overtones ignored and dismissed) - shouldn't she have at least rocked ONE pair of cheetah print heels?

Fashion OGs should be shaking their head right now and recognizing the shoe in question... for you bougie budget novices out there, this is a Stuart Weitzman delectable stiletto pump - "Beacon Pinch Toe." Cheetah print shoes are a wardrobe staple, and when done right they glam up even the most mundane outfit. Weitzman is notorious for having narrow (and expensive!) shoes... but his heels make your legs look dynamic and inspired.

And considering that January is the traditional month for "list-making," I'd figured I'd share a few of my January "favorite things" with you... if Oprah can do it... well then why can't I? *smile*

If Eluxury.com and Bluefly.com are the fashionable budget shoppers online lodestones... well then Shop Style must be the holy grail of high-end online bargain shopping! It is one of the most comprehensive shopping websites currently available and allows you to type in your item of interest... and pull up every location, price, sale, and option for that one item. While technically this isn't a "thing" it will get you plenty closer to find those items that you dream about... mesmerizing!

2. Brian Atwood "Cleo" Lizard Pump in Plum (available at www.footcandyshoes.com)

I just received these in the mail today and I must say - kudos Brian Atwood... kudos! I am quickly becoming a fan of Atwood's sleek lines and flattering silhouettes... not to mention the shoe is enormously comfy and versatile. Best of all - Atwood's shoes tend to go on super sale! These shoes were purchased for $160 (shipping/handling and tax included)... a significant drop from the original $865 price tag!

I'm not a huge perfume fan (and yes you may quote me on that)... my favorite scents are limited to Prada... and that's about it (please note that I am open to perfume advice... feel free to send suggestions!). My boyfriend however... is a smell-a-holic. He lives and breathes colognes and probably has 80 bottles at his disposal. Such a habit might seem monstrously expensive but with a website like scentiments, it doesn't have to be. Scents like Burberry Touch or Vera Wang Men's Cologne are sold for as low as $12.99 (retailing in major stores for double and triple those prices). Remember that Prada perfume I adore? Well I love it because I have to... I paid almost $80 for it and I felt I needed to get my money's worth... I checked on scentiments.com and guess the price? $40. Yikes, what a difference a discount makes!

4. Sephora Brand Metallic Pocket Brush Set (available at www.sephora.com)

I received this brush set from one of my best friends for Christmas... I think she must be psychic because I recently (accidentally) threw away about $300 worth of makeup and tools, including half of my professional NARS brush set (ugh, don't ask!).

It's compactness is quite a boon in a pinch and it's affordable to even the thriftiest of budget bougies at $15. If you are not aware, you can easily re-use brush sets, simply by washing them with mild detergeant and letting them air dry for a day or two. I plan on beefing up my brush supply and buying another set... from CVS... yes! CVS! Out of all of the many brush sets I've owned (and I've owned quite a few), CVS makes the best liner brushes... for about $2! Try it out!

5. The Macbook Pro (13-inch, available at www.apple.com)

My Father, brother, and I purchased a 13 inch Macbook (edit: thanks for being a stickler Frank!) in white for my mother for Christmas. I'm a mac-nerd and I love everything by, for, and about macs. Sleek, elegant, and efficient, I have yet to have another computer to compare to my apples. I've tried Dell and Sony Vaio and both made me run screaming for the hills *shudder* For those of you looking for a computer, I strongly urge you to consider one in the Mac Family, especially if you're limited to basic technological phenomenon (I mean if you're a gamer, you really do need a separate console for all of that nerdiness).

At $1,099 retail the Macbook might seem a bit pricey but there are ways to score the computer for significantly cheaper or on a budget. Some examples: find a friend in college, graduate, or law school... and buy through them (this goes for anything software or hardware related). Discounts range from as low as 5% to as high as 50% on the software/hardware front. Plus your computer will come loaded with tons of goodies otherwise unavailable to you, like endnote. Another budget solution is to finance your purchase and at $30 a month, Apple has a great credit plan. **warning** do not undertake credit endeavors if you are BAD with credit (fyi, I plan on doing a blog about establishing strong credit or repairing damaged credit!)!! If the Macbook is not your style, try the mac-mini. At $599, the mac mini is a stylish and affordable alternative to the macbook...

6. (Bonus Item) The Wire - Box DVD Sets
Why is this a bonus? Well because I'm almost *not willing* to bargain on the Wire DVDs... the show is so crucial to me (and most) that if available at full price... we will snatch it up, no questions asked. However, I've noticed that the prices listed in stores radically differ from the prices available on your friendly online store.

You can buy seasons 1-3 for the insanely low price of $96 from www.bargainvideo.com (versus $150 in Best Buy)... if you're willing to go second-hand (which in many cases, is as good as new) Amazon offers some fairly interesting deals. Better yet... if you're willing to wait (I know many of you are not), the prices for the DVDs will drop in approximately two months. I bought all 4 seasons for $121 in November from Amazon... they've since risen as high as $223. So if you're willing to wait or to hunt... you'll definitely be able to afford one of the hottest shows on television right now!

Hello my beautiful bougie folks,

If you've just discovered this website (perhaps by accident... perhaps on purpose... perhaps through gentle persuasion at the hands of a friend *hint hint*) welcome... and a large welcome to everyone in general since this is officially my first post to what I hope will be a fabulous (and fashionable) endeavor.

A little about myself:
I'm a 26 (soon to be 27) year old academic and closet fashionista. Stylish budget shopping is my sport of choice and I'm quite good at it *pats self on the back*... years of training by my "original shopping gangsta" mother have instilled in me a nose for sophisticated bargains, steals, and deals! My full time job is an advanced degree PhD candidate at a well-known university.

A little about this site:
For years, my friends and I have been helping each other find fabulous finds at discounted prices. Why pay $700 for a pair of Jimmy Choos when you can pay $200? $220 for a pair of Rock & Republic Jeans? Try $75! $1500 for a week-long trip to Jamaica? Never that - I'll stick to $500 all inclusive vacations in the Dominican Republic.

This website is meant to entertain, enrich, and open the viewers up to a world of stylishing findings at a 50% discount rate.
